Closing Time

  1. Hensin Tsao, MD, PhD

Dear Readers,

After more than two decades of providing up-to-the-minute, in-depth analysis of the dermatology literature, NEJM Journal Watch Dermatology is publishing its last issue. I am deeply grateful to have been a part of JWD for more than 15 years and to have worked with some of the best and most deeply thoughtful dermatologic scholars on our Editorial Board. I have also been profoundly impressed with the editorial freedom in which JWD operated, even during its long era of sponsorship; there is not another literature review in my mind with so much depth and so little bias.

Many of us grew up with JWD, using it as a virtual journal club, a study guide for the Boards, or just as a resource for a busy professional life. Rather than viewing the end of JWD as a death of sorts, I see it as reflecting a moment of metamorphosis. Immediate internet access, faster-than-lightning information flow, and free online content have displaced the need to feel parchment in our hands and to experience a quiet scholarly moment without technology.

For now, the presses, as well as our online presence, are coming to a halt. As we flip off the lights, those of us who depend on NEJM Journal Watch Dermatology for our monthly dose of dermatologic information will undoubtedly feel a momentary emptiness. However, I think for many of us, we will soon realize that JWD has taught us the importance of scholarship and the value of lifelong learning — lessons that are enduring and that will remind us that JWD will never go dark.

Editor-in-Chief, 2010–2016, NEJM Journal Watch Dermatology
