Nutrition and Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors

The American Cancer Society has published updated guidelines for nutrition and physical activity for cancer survivors in CA: A Cancer Journal for Clinicians.

Among the recommendations for reducing risk for recurrence:

  • Cancer survivors should return to normal activities as soon as possible after diagnosis; they should exercise at least 150 minutes a week, with strength training twice a week.

  • Survivors should consider taking supplements only if a nutrient deficiency is clinically or biochemically demonstrated.

The article offers nutritional and physical activity tips geared toward specific types of cancer and lists common questions patients might ask their physicians — for example, does alcohol increase the risk for cancer recurrence?
