Biodegradable Stent Recommended for FDA Approval

By the Editors

An advisory panel recommended on Tuesday that the FDA approve the first dissolvable stent, Reuters reports.

The Absorb GT1 Bioresorbable Vascular Scaffold aims to be an alternative to permanent metal stents in patients with ischemic heart disease. It releases everolimus for 1 year and then degrades over the next 2 years.

The device is already approved for use in Europe, the Associated Press reports.
