New Type 1 Diabetes Test Approved

By Kristin J. Kelley

Edited by André Sofair, MD, MPH

The FDA has approved a new diagnostic test for type 1 diabetes. The KRONUS zinc transporter 8 autoantibody (ZnT8Ab) ELISA assay detects ZnT8Ab — produced principally by patients with type 1 diabetes — in a patient's blood.

The test found the ZnT8Ab antibody in 65% of blood samples from patients diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. The rate of false-positive results in samples from patients diagnosed with other kinds of diabetes or other autoimmune diseases was less than 2%. Negative test results, the FDA notes, don't rule out a diagnosis for type 1 diabetes.

This new test might be very useful in the differentiation of type 1 diabetes from other types /type 2, MODY, neonatal diabetes, etc).
