ACIP Updates Flu Vaccine Recommendations for the 2014–2015 Season
By Cara Adler
The CDC's Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices has published its influenza vaccine recommendations for the 2014–2015 season in MMWR.
Among the updated recommendations:
The strains in this season's vaccines will be identical to those in last season's. For this reason, only one dose of the 2014–2015 vaccine is needed for children aged 6 months to 8 years who received at least one dose of the 2013-2014 vaccine.
Live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV) is preferred for healthy children aged 2 to 8 years. However, if it is not immediately available, inactivated influenza vaccine should be used, rather than delaying vaccination to obtain LAIV.
A helpful table lists the vaccines that will be available for the upcoming flu season, including their mercury content, route of administration, and age indications. A list of contraindications to LAIV is also provided.
