Insurers Trying to Discourage HIV-Infected Patients, Coalition Says

By Amy Orciari Herman

A coalition of 31 HIV/AIDS groups has asked the Department of Health and Human Services to investigate whether some health plans under the Affordable Care Act are attempting to dissuade HIV-infected patients from enrolling, the Wall Street Journal reports.

In a letter to HHS, the coalition noted numerous "disturbing trends" in the plans, especially in terms of drug coverage. For example, several insurers require patients to pay up to 50% of the cost of their HIV medications — and that's after a deductible — instead of flat copays. HHS said it was "looking into the issue ... to see if further action is needed,"according to the WSJ.
