David J. Bjorkman, MD, MSPH (HSA), SM (Epid.), is Professor in the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition at the University of Utah School of Medicine. He served as Dean and Executive Medical Director for the University of Utah School of Medicine from 2004 to 2011 and as Dean and Executive Director of Medical Affairs for the Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine at Florida Atlantic University from 2011 to 2016. Dr. Bjorkman has been an investigator on numerous outcome trials of endoscopic therapy, peptic-ulcer disease, and the gastrointestinal (GI) safety of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). He has special interest in GI bleeding, clinical outcomes of endoscopic procedures, GI complications associated with NSAID use, clinical epidemiology, clinical-trial design, applications of evidence-based medicine, and economic effects of GI disorders. Dr. Bjorkman is the President of the World Gastroenterology Organization (WGO). He served as President of The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ASGE) from 2004 to 2005 and was on the Society’s Governing Board from 1999 through 2007. He received the Society’s Rudolph Schindler award in 2011. Dr. Bjorkman has been reviewing research on the stomach for NEJM Journal Watch Gastroenterology since the publication's launch in 2000 and is its Deputy Editor.
